Inclusive Bathroom Project Groundbreaking

Early Monday morning, Westwind Staff gathered with contractors from Cellar Ridge Construction and architects from Urban Patterns. During a short ceremony, we officially broke ground on phase one of the Westwind Inclusive Bathroom Project.

The festivities included a short poem reflecting on the importance of sustainability, a few words from our Executive Director Andy, who reflected on his first interactions with these bathrooms as an Outdoor School student leader, and a ceremonial swing of the sledgehammer.

The Westwind Inclusive Bathroom Project is a multi-phase endeavor intended to modernize our bathrooms and create bathroom facilities that meet the needs of all staff, campers, and visitors. Phase one is a complete remodel of the staff bathrooms located under Wilson Lodge.

Input from current and past summer staff was vital to our planning process. Last fall, we hosted listening sessions to gather feedback about what our summer staff needed from their bathrooms and where the current bathrooms were falling short. Feedback included making sure to include ample storage space, ensuring privacy, and the need for good ventilation. Currently, Demolition of the existing staff bathrooms is well underway, and completion is targeted for early June.

This is only phase one of the Westwind Inclusive Bathroom Project. We are currently working to secure funding to reimagine and remodel Cascade Head and all of our outhouses. Stay tuned for updates!
