What Happens at Mushroom Camp

Mushroom Camp is a weekend of fungi-themed fun. We welcome everyone to search for mushrooms and learn more about the fungi kingdom. For those who have never foraged, we have easy-to-follow forays and fun workshops. For experienced mushroom hunters, we offer 529 acres of diverse terrain with over 125 varieties of mushrooms. We also offer in-depth ecological presentations and workshops. For all, you will unlock the artistic properties of mushrooms and enjoy good food and wine. We want to welcome everyone (18+) to explore the fall colors of Westwind, make new friends over drinks, and enjoy a mushroom-themed weekend of fun. Learn what activities we offer at Mushroom Camp.

Forays

Every day, our mycologists and staff lead forays out into the wonderful wilderness of Westwind. These forays encompass hikes for all skill and ability levels. Our mycologist will help you identify species of fungi, explain how forest ecology influences mycology, and help you understand how the forest works. You will collect mushrooms that you can keep for meals, medicine, or art. These forays will take you to new places at Westwind and open your eyes to a new layer of the forest.

Workshops

On Saturday afternoon, we hold a series of workshops lead by our incredible mycologists. These workshops include mushroom dye making, natural medicines, inoculation, and fungi ecology. You may return with beautifully dyed yarn, your own mushroom cultivation kit, or a tincture to help with your next cold. All of these workshops blend ecology with art and understanding.

Maxine Borcherding is joining us all the way from Portugal to lead a food demonstration. She will prepare delicious mushroom-based recipes and pair them with incredible local wines. And, you get to take the recipes home to impress your friends.

Other Activities

Although many of the activities at Mushroom Camp are themed around fungi, we also offer a slate of other activities to truly appreciate our incredible space. There will be opportunities for hiking, sightseeing, tide-pooling, games, and community-building activities. And after a long day exploring Westwind, you can sit by a fire, enjoy a warm beverage, and enjoy the gorgeous fall scenery.
