By the numbers
In 2024, we welcomed 58 rental groups! That’s more than one per week and over 2000 people from 58 different organizations, schools, and groups. Thirty-three of those rentals were mission-aligned non-profits! Rentals brought children, families, individuals, and groups to Westwind from our coastal community, the Willamette Valley, and beyond. These rental groups include multiple long-running family reunions celebrating generations of connection, twenty classes of elementary, middle, and high school students bringing their classrooms to the outdoors, and two wedding parties celebrating love on the beautiful Westwind beach.
Big picture
Rentals are an important part of achieving our mission. Our rental groups span a wide range of organizations, non-profits, and companies. Thirty-three of our rental groups in 2024 were mission-aligned non-profits, bringing people from across the region to explore Westwind and learn to be stewards of the environment. Rentals expand the scope of people we can welcome to our shores and help us build access to outdoor learning opportunities. In addition to our rental groups, we also host volunteer groups like AmeriCorps NCCC and Trailkeepers of Oregon. These partners have done incredible work helping clear trails, conserve Westwind, and build our new Raindrop to Sea Trail. These partnerships bring additional visitors to Westwind and grow our community of stewards while conserving the environmental integrity of Westwind.
Exciting day rentals
We also welcomed several amazing day rentals and day visitors. These renters ranged from individual walks on the beach and hikes through our forest, to seed-collecting coalitions, and ecology workshops. Day rentals are part of our continued effort to increase access to Westwind and welcome as many people as possible to explore our wild shores. We offer day rentals and site visits to a wide variety of groups and individuals. You can always reach out to our Rental Manager Missy (missy@westwind.org) to learn more about day visits to Westwind!
Outdoor School
Once again, Westwind was a MESD Outdoor School site for both the spring and fall sessions. We welcomed over one thousand 6th graders from Portland area schools to experience a week of school connected to nature. At Outdoor School, students learn about four areas of the environment: soil, water, plants, and animals. Through field studies, they understand how the ecosystem is connected and build an application for the outdoors. The beautiful and diverse biomes of Westwind inspire students to continue pursuing the stewardship of nature. By partnering with Outdoor School, Westwind continues to be a leader in outdoor education by connecting children with life-changing outdoor experiences.
